Today, the average American household is 3.15 people. How big is your family compared to this statistic?
Whether you’ve got 0 kids or 10 of them, there comes a time when you’ll want to say “no” to babies. And what better way to do so than with permanent birth control like tubal ligation?
However, some women go on to regret that decision. The question then is: can you untie your tubes?

Can You Untie Your Tubes?
Once you get your tubes tied, can you untie them? While tubal ligation is considered a permanent form of birth control, the answer turns out to be yes!
However, most women are interested in this procedure because they want to have a baby. But do note that just because you can untie your tubes, it’s not guaranteed that you can get pregnant. Plus, there’s the cost of surgery to consider as well (learn more here).
What Affects Your Chances of Success
Before you jump into tubal ligation reversal, you might want to think about your personal situation first. Some women will have much better luck conceiving after reversal, while others won’t get pregnant at all. For example, if you’re older than 40, then the chances of getting pregnant after untying your tubes aren’t very high.
But what else can affect your chance of conceiving?
Type of Tubal Ligation
If you had your fallopian tubes clipped/pinched, cauterized, or just a section removed, these all give you a better chance of post-procedure pregnancies.
However, if you had a fimbriectomy, the chances of a successful reversal aren’t great. This is because sections of your fallopian tubes near your ovary are cut out, which makes it more difficult to “reconnect”. In this case, in-vitro fertilization (IVF) might be a better fertility treatment.
How Much Healthy Tube You Have Left
Not only does the type of tubal ligation you had matter, but also how much healthy tube you have left.
To reverse tubal ligation, what’s left of the healthy tube needs to be reconnected. If you don’t have much left, then the doctor is limited in what they have to work with.
Your General Health
The more in shape you are, the better chances of conceiving, period.
This doesn’t just pertain to your weight either. If you’ve got health conditions (such as autoimmune disorders), then this can affect how successful your reversal is. If you had trouble conceiving prior to the procedure, then this can make it harder for you to get pregnant too.

So can you untie your tubes? It turns out that the answer is yes!
However, just because untying tubes is possible doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be successful in getting pregnant. So make an appointment with your doctor and discuss the risks, chances of pregnancy, and more to see if this is the right choice for you.
