What Are the Most Common Orthopedic Injuries?

Did you know that the orthopedic surgery industry is estimated to be worth over 28 million in 2022?

Orthopedic injuries are a very common type of injury. In fact, you may have experienced one yourself.

But what are the most common types of orthopedic injuries? Read on to learn about the most common injuries and when to see a surgeon if you hurt yourself!

Torn Meniscus

One of the most common orthopedic injuries is a torn meniscus. This is a small piece of cartilage in your knee that helps it to move freely and how you want it to move.

While some torn meniscus injuries can heal on their own, sometimes you will need to seek out an orthopedic surgeon to make sure it heals properly.

Torn ACL

It’s quite easy to tear an ACL. A torn ACL occurs when the leg moves in a different direction relatively quickly. For instance, when playing sports, if you twist or turn too quickly, you can tear your ACL.

Rest and recovery are two of the biggest ways to recover from a torn ACL, but sometimes regenerative surgery is needed.

Ankle Sprain

It’s pretty likely that at some point in your life you will sprain your ankle. You may have twisted it before, where you felt a twinge of pain that went on and off for a few days. An ankle sprain is similar, however, it usually leads to much more swelling and pain than twisting it.

An ankle sprain can heal over time with rest and icing, however, sometimes a boot is helpful to using crutches to rest is also recommended. It depends on the severity of the sprain.

Stress Fractures

A stress fracture occurs when you are using the same muscles and joints over and over again. The most common stress fractures occur in the legs and feet from overuse. If you get a stress fracture, there are small cracks in the bones.

Many times, runners and other athletes will get stress fractures from repetitive movements and overusing the same area of the body. This is common in the shins and the feet.

If you have a stress fracture, it will feel much like an internal bruise and can lead to swelling.

Staying off of the affected area will help it to heal faster.

Tennis Elbow

Tennis elbow is also an overuse injury that can happen to anyone who uses their arms and elbows a lot. Painters, tennis players, hairstylists, and plumbers are more susceptible to getting this injury.

If you feel it coming on, be sure to rest.
