Are you keeping your toilet clean?
Aside from observing minimum health protocols, keeping your house clean is key to surviving the pandemic. One of the most crucial areas you need to look out for is your bathroom. This is because it contains many hard surfaces that microbes and viruses can live on.
Your toilet bowl contains about 3.2 million bacteria per inch. So an uncleaned toilet is practically a haven for germs and bugs.
To help hasten your cleaning session without sacrificing your safety, here are five toilet cleaning hacks:
1. Use Coca-Cola and Pumice Stone for a Sparkly White Toilet
Not only can Coca-Cola bring relief during a hot sunny day, but it can also help clean your bathrooms. Specifically, Coca-Cola makes a great stain remover for toilets.
Coca-Cola contains phosphoric and citric acid giving it a rust-busting power. However, when phosphoric acid interacts with iron oxide, it dissolves it.
Moreover, the citric acid in Coca-Cola also makes an effective stain remover. The citric acid breaks away iron oxide, which loosens the rust so you can easily scrub it off. This is the easiest among the toilet cleaning hacks as you only need a can of Coca-Cola.
First, drizzle the coke around your toilet rim, ensuring all the stains are evenly covered. Then, let it sit for at least an hour to get the stains to loosen up. The longer you let the Coca-Cola sit, the easier it will be to remove the stain and rust on your toilet.
It will be a lot easier to clean your toilet if you use a pumice stone to scrub off the stain and rust. Pumice stone is a porous volcanic rock that has a soft texture which makes it safe for scrubbing toilets.
All you have to do is dip the pumice stone in warm water and scrub away. You’ll notice that a paste from the pumice stone will appear on the surface of the toilet you’re scrubbing. Leave the paste and continue to scrub the surface until you’re satisfied.
2. Use the Baking Soda and Vinegar Combo
Having a stack of baking soda and vinegar at home comes in handy for cleaning the bathroom. These two contain abrasives that allow them to remove particles and stains.
Using one of the two can help remove stains but combining them will bring better results. While there are a lot of cleaning products out there, this mixture proves to be a cheap but effective method.
Why spend money when there’s a more viable solution in your kitchen cupboard? All you have to do is sprinkle a cup of baking soda in your toilet before pouring 1 cup of vinegar. You will get a fizzing chemical reaction which is normal.
Put the lid down and let the ingredients sit for at least 30 minutes. Again, the longer you wait, the better the results will be.
When you’re ready, lift the lid and start scrubbing with a toilet brush. Don’t worry about possible plumbing issues, as the vinegar and baking soda do not bring any harm to your plumbing. Make sure to repeat this process once or twice a week to help keep your toilet squeaky clean.
3. Sanitize Your Toilet with Hydrogen Peroxide
Hydrogen peroxide can kill microorganisms such as spores, bacteria, fungi, and viruses. As such, if you’re looking for effective bathroom cleaning hacks, hydrogen peroxide should be on your list. It makes a great disinfectant on plastic, glass, or metal surfaces.
You can use a 3% hydrogen peroxide concentration commonly found in stores. You can also opt to dilute it with water to a 0.5% or 1% concentration; either way, it works fine.
However, before disinfecting your toilet with hydrogen peroxide, clean the toilet with soap and water first. Afterward, you can pour hydrogen peroxide, making sure to leave it there for at least a minute. This provides time to kill the bacteria and viruses in your toilet bowl.
4. Homemade Fizzy Toilet Bombs
If you’re looking for how to clean your toilet, toilet bombs are one of the easiest ways to do so. Not only that, it can absorb foul smells and leave a sweet fragrance after use.
Contrary to popular belief, it’s easy to make a toilet bomb. All you need is a cup of baking soda, citric acid, essential oils, and water.
Mix 1 cup of baking soda with a quarter of citric acid (lemon juice works) in a bowl. Add four drops of essential oils of your choice into the mixture. Add one drop at a time, making sure to mix it well.
Afterward, sprinkle one-fourth teaspoon of water into the mixture, then mix. Finally, pack the mixture into a mold and let it dry for 12 hours or more.
When it’s time to clean the toilet, simply drop the toilet bomb. It will start fizzing, which is a sign that it’s cleaning your toilet, so don’t panic. It’s advisable to scrub the toilet with a toilet brush even after using a toilet bomb for an even better result.
